Summary

 

Five diverse and incredibly talented San Diego writers have come together to get political and personal. Monumental History takes the hot button issue of statues in public places, we explore all angles and perspectives. Should they still be there? Are the people that were memorialized still worthy of these statues? Do these memorials reflect our current nation? What does one symbol mean to one person and what does it mean to others?

 

At OSP one of our mottos is 'Let's talk about it", we cannot wait to hear what you have to say. Civil conversation leads to empathy, empathy leads to change.....

Director

James is the current Executive Artistic Director of OnStage Playhouse and has been lucky to have been acting for the last 30+ please and he's been directing for the past 6 years. Directing credits include "A Bright New Boise", "All My Sons", "A Piece of My Heart", "Venus in Fur", "All in the Timing", and now "Monumental History" all at OnStage Playhouse; "A Permanent Image" at Point Loma Playhouse; "Burn This" at various theatres in San Diego.

Emily Candia

Emily is so very happy to be returning to the stage this year. Her credits include Clybourne Park (Trinity Theatre), All My Sons and A Piece of My Heart (OSP), Peter and the Starcatcher (Lamplighters), and Next to Normal (The Empty Space). She thanks James and everyone at OSP for their hard work and dedication to make this show run possible, including the amazing crew and cast. She thanks her friends, extended family, her partner, and her Mom, Dad, and sister for their consistent love and undying support. Everyone stay safe out there!

Vanessa Provencio is thrilled to be stage managing Onstage's newest production of "A Monumental History". She is incredibly grateful to OnStage as well as everyone who allowed her to take part in this beautiful performance, and she hopes you enjoy the show!

Since moving to California in 2017 she has been stage managing non-stop:  Women in Jeopardy & God of Carnage – Lamplighters Theatre; American Idiot - Southwestern Community College; Melancholy Play – InnerMission Productions; A Permanent Image – Point Loma Playhouse; A Piece of My Heart, All My Sons, Venus In Fur, A Bright New Boise, & All in the Timing – OnStage Playhouse.  She hales from Texas/Oklahoma where she worked with Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park for several seasons, Oklahoma City Theatre Company, and on-call assistance for Oklahoma Repertory Company.  She’s also worked across the seas with Carnival Cruise Lines and with Rob Lake Magic.  She thanks her wonderful family for all their never-ending support, and her amazing friends who have become family here in San Diego. “Adventure Is Out There!” - Up

Born and raised in San Diego, Sandra received her BAs in Theatre & Human Development from UCSD.

Zephyr Landie

Zephyr Landie is a student at San Diego Mesa College. He started his theatre career doing sound design for Peter and the Starcatcher. He has since done lighting design for The Jacksonian, God of Carnage and sound design for Treasure Island. This is his first time designing at Onstage Playhouse and he’s excited to be designing again after a year with such a talented group of artists.

MaeAnn Ross

Sound/Projection

MaeAnn Ross is a Texas transplant. She holds a MFA in Sound Design from UC San Diego and a BFA in Technical Production from Texas State University. She is the current Post MFA Fellow in Design at Pomona College and the current Technical Director at Onstage Playhouse.  Professional design credits: The 39 Steps, and Wait Until Dark (Wimberley Playhouse);  She Loves Me (St. Edward’s University); And Then There Were None (TEXArts); A Bright New Boise (OnStage Playhouse); The Virgin Trial (Cygnet Theatre); A Kind of Weather (Diversionary Theatre); gunTOPIA (The Roustabouts). Jose Balistrieri

Jose Balistrieri is grateful to be part of  OnStage Playhouse world premiere with Monumental History! His recent credits include: Native Gardens (The Old Theatre),Cloud Tectonics (New Village Arts),Bug, and Love’s Labour’s Lost (UCSC). Holds a BA in Theatre from the University of California Santa Cruz. Announced 2018 Broadway-world winner for Best Actor in a professional play for his role as Anibal De La Luna in Cloud Tectonics. Would like to give a huge thank you to the San Diego Rep, Herbert Siguenza, my friends, my girlfriend, & my family whom I always keep in my heart.

Leo Ebanks is a Theatre (Performance) Major student at SDSU. As his 2nd production with OSP, He is hopeful for
what's to come and thankful for the knowledge that has come so far in the process. He held the privilege of playing
the past roles of Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing @ SDSU, Billy in “Carrie, The Musical” @ Onstage playhouse,
and Georg in “Spring Awakening'' @ Grossmont College. He’d like to thank his family and everyone else who stuck
around during these difficult times.

Thelma de Castro

The Buzz

Thelma Virata de Castro's plays have been performed by Asian Story Theater, The Old Globe, Logan Squared Productions, Circle Circle dot dot, and others. She was a Creative Catalyst Fellow with The San Diego Foundation, and has worked on several California Humanities projects, including the upcoming Saving Stories with New Village Arts Theatre. She is a San Diego Dramatists Guild Ambassador, a Teaching Artist for Playwrights Project, and the Founder of San Diego Playwrights. The San Diego Union-Tribune included her in its list of Phenomenal San Diego Women.

Salomon Maya

Salomón is an Emmy and San Diego Advertising Award winning producer/writer as well as a local actor with past regional credits including: San Diego REP, La Jolla Playhouse, Diversionary Theatre, Onstage Playhouse and more. Salomón is also a local playwright who has produced work for Scripps Ranch and the Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival. Salomón is currently the Creative Director and Morning Show Producer for a local Spanish TV station, a monthly columnist for L’Chaim San Diego Magazine and a board member for the NTC Foundation at Liberty Station.

Carla Navarro

Carla Navarro is an actress and playwright who is driven by the power of impactful stories. Her work for the stage engages the ubtle and intricate connections we make as human beings while tackling a wide variety of subjects ranging from love, drugs, and race, all with the rawest of emotions.

Carla studied at Facetas Theater School in Santiago, Chile. An American-born actress of Chilean descent, Carla has made her home in the community of San Diego theater and is delighted to return to OnStage Playhouse, this time in a playwriting role for "Monumental Project".

Herbert Siguenza

to conquer is to live

Herbert Siguenza is currently the Playwright in Residence for the San Diego Repertory Theatre thanks to a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Herbert is also a founding member of the performance group CULTURE CLASH. As a solo writer and performer Mr. Siguenza has produced Cantinflas! , A Weekend with Pablo Picasso, Steal Heaven , El Henry (Best new play San Diego Critics Circle Award 2014), Manifest Destinitis, Beachtown and Bad Hombres/Good Wives for the San Diego Rep.


Mr. Siguenza is also an accomplished visual artist and has exhibited both nationally and internationally. He has a BFA in printmaking from the California College of Arts, Oakland, California. TV and Film credits: “Ben Ten Alien Swarm” for the Cartoon Network, “Larry Crowne” feature film directed by Tom Hanks. His voice was prominently featured in Pixar’s 2017 Oscar winning animation feature, “Coco”.

John Wells III

John W. Wells III is a San Diego based, author, actor, producer, and founding member of Loud Fridge Theatre Group. Notable credits include: Actually (Tom U.S., San Diego Repertory Theatre) Communicating Doors (Harold, Scripps Ranch Theatre), Monsters in the American Cinema (Remy, Scripps Ranch Theatre), Cardboard Piano (Pika, Diversionary Theatre), The Mystery of Love and Sex (Jonny, DiversionaryTheatre), Sister Act (T.j, Musical Theatre West), SLAM (The La Jolla Playhouse), STRAIGHT (Loud Fridge Theatre group), and is thrilled to join the OSP family.

John is overjoyed to announce the recent release of his debut novel THE LAST ANGEL WARRIOR, which is now available on Amazon.
